5 Marker In The Sand - 4:28
One of many songs that starts out rocking with Matt pounding his tom-toms, the entire band funking it up. The chorus rocks as usual, evening out the song's funky verses. This has the potential to put off the casual fan, but like Gone, and Army Reserve, it has the power of a slow burn. Again, not too much distortion, with guitar tones akin to how WWS sounds. By the end of the tune, they're rocking clean guitars and the B3.
Lyrics:
There is a marker / No one sees it cause of sand
Its covered over / All the messages of care from misunderstanding
What original truth was /Expanding in a place, but not in love, yeah
What went wrong?
Walking tightrope high
Over marrowed ground
Seeing visions of falling up somehow
Oh do come down where the living lay
What is near in love?
So I'm forgiving you, needing forgiveness first
So what do you say?
Those undecided needn't have faith to be free
And those misguided it was a trampling of feet
Now you got both sides claiming killing in God's name
But God is nowhere to be found ... ???
What goes on?
Walking tightrope line
Over marrowed ground
Walk the bridges before you burn them down
You'll come round where the living lay ???
What is living love?
I'm forgiving here, needing forgiveness first
So what do you say?
God, what do you say?
I feel a sickness, a sickness coming over me
I'm watching freedom being sucked straight out to sea
And no solution, will ??? me my wooden .... ???
But their delusion is feeling dangerous to me
What goes wrong?
Walking tightrope high
Over marrowed ground
Seeing visions off... ???
Are you bending down?
Ogh do come down where the living lay ???
What is living love?
I'm forgiving here, needing forgiveness first
So what do you say?
God, what do you say?
Comin' out
Comin' now...
8 Big Wave - 3:02
The best hard rocker on the record. Its fucking incredible from start to finish, evident of Ed's passion for the ocean. A solo starts off after the verses and chorus with a couple notes, then kicks into high gear with Ed's voice soaring and Mike destroying his wah-wah climbing up the neck. Wait for the liner notes. Only the chorus is remotely decipherable at this point. The rhythm of the melody and lyrics is really strong, very tight and quick. If this doesn't blow up all over radio and become a really strong live rocker, I'll be really surprised. This track fades out. It'll sound more proper in a live setting when it rocks to a close.
Lyrics:
You could read ??? -ation, ohhh ohhh
In the marijuana nation, yeah yeah
A surface celebration, ohhh ohhh
I'm a billion adaptations, yeah yeah
Got-me-a-big-wave / Ride-me-a-big-wave / Got-me-a big wave
Got-me-a-big-wave / Ride-me-a-big-wave / Got-me-a big wave
I feel the need / planted in me
Found under years ago / can you see?
The ocean's size / defined in time and tide
Rising all played up on me
Feeling so kind / so let me ride___.
Screaming at a nation, ohhh ohhh
Connecting these locations, yeah yeah
Seething meditations, ohhh ohhh
Achieving levitations, yeah yeah
Got-me-a-big-wave / Ride-me-a-big-wave / Got-me-a big wave
Got-me-a-big-wave / Ride-me-a-big-wave / Got-me-a big wave
I feel the need / planted in me
Found under years ago / can you see?
The ocean's size / defined in time and tide
Rising all played up on me
Feeling so kind / so let me ride___.
Got me a ride!
Oh got me a riiiide!
9 Gone - 4:14
If you hated the demo or the live version, fear not. This could grow on you.
It starts off with an acoustic guitar and reverbed swells and guitar in the background. Boom creeps in with keys here and there. Matt enters with a tom-tom part for the pre-chorus, then the chorus launches with nice phrasing from the guitars. Like other songs on the album, after the chorus, things drop and pick up again, but much quieter like the opening verse. Another tune with Neil Young/Springsteen influences. The full band version adds much more strength overall.
10 Wasted Reprise - 0:59
An organ opens with a chord progression. The sound reminds me of "What Happened Yesterday" from Mirrorball or the sound of the Pete Townshend version of "Let My Love Open The Door." There is no other instrument other than Ed's voice and the organ. Killer melody.
Lyrics:
I've faced it / A life wasted
I'm never going back again
I've been tasting / A life wasted
I'm never going back again
I escaped it / A life wasted
I'm never going back... again
11 Army Reserve - 3:49
Stone and Mike's guitars, panned hard left and right open up together with a delayed guitar line echoing in the right channel. The rock in the verses is offset by a chorus performed in cut-time. A break of silence in the song, and things relaunch again. Sounds like it's moving from 4/4 into 3/4 between verse and chorus. This sounds nothing like Nothing As It Seems, but Mike's solo lines have the same tone and effects, but are played with more angst (for lack of a better word).
Lyrics:
(And though/How long??) must she stand before the ground
It gives way to an endless hole
She can feel this war on her face
With stars (scars?) on her pillow
She's fallen in darkness
Begging for some but
I'm not blind I can see it coming
Looks like lightning in my child's eye
I'm not frantic I can feel it coming
Bodily shakes in my body (???)
Cursed and slanted
Oh he's giving her sideways eye
The empty chair with ... ???
Life can silence … ???
Once she shows to contain him
But it's becoming a lie
She tells herself and anyone else
Father is risking his life for our freedom
I'm not blind / I can see it coming
Looks like lightning / in my child's eye
I'm not frantic / I can feel it coming
??? will you save me / if you save yourself?
12 Come Back - 5:31
I think someone mentioned this would be the new "Black." This is absolutely fucking beautiful. Its in 3/4, so its very waltzy. Matt kicks it off with a smash of his hi-hat and then it just becomes gorgeous. Mellow guitar chords, with clean solo lines (light phasers) seeping in eventually, B3 in the background, building into a harder solo with Ed's voice hitting higher notes a la Bono. Very Neil Young. Very Bruce Springsteen overall.
Lyrics:
If I keep holding out / Will the light shine through?
Under this broken roof / Its only rain that I feel
I've been wishing now today / Oh oh oh.... come back
I have been planning out / All that I'd say to you
Since you slipped away / Know that I still remain true
I've been wishing now today / Please say that if you hadn't gone now
I wouldn't have lost you another way / From wherever you are
Oh oh oh... come back
And these days, they linger on / And in the night I've been waiting for
The real possibility that I may meet you in my dreams
I go to sleep...
If I don't fall apart / Will my memories stay clear?
So you have to go / And I had to remain hear
But the strangest thing today / So far away and yet you feel so close
I'm not gonna question it any other way
There must be an open door / for you... to come back
And the days, they linger on / Every night, when I'm waiting for
The real possibility I may meet you in my dreams
Sometimes you're there and you're talking right to me
Come the morning I could swear you're next to me... it's ok
It's ok... It's ok
Ohhh be here... Come back... Come back...
I'll be here... Come back... Come back...
Ohhh I'll be here... Come back! ... Come back! ...
Ooooooooh oooh oooh oooh
Ooooooooh oooh oooh oooh
Ooooooooh oooh oooh oooh
13 Inside Job - 7:10
Is it really that long or is there a hidden track? Acoustic strumming in 4/4 comes in after an intro of what sounds like a reversed organ effect along with auto volume swells loaded with reverb and a little delay (probably from Mike's Line 6 DL4, but think of the last notes of his Wishlist solo for the idea). A real piano comes in with chords and fluttered notes. Its very quiet until Matt comes in after more than 3 and a half minutes and the chorus gets more powerful and a classic rock solo goes to work to close the song out. Suddenly, high pitched notes from a string instrument fade in for a few brief moments, sounding like a majestical, peaceful revelation or epiphany of some sort only to fade out again.
Lyrics: (Horrifically off. Wait for what the real liner notes.)
Underneath this smile lies everything
All my hopes and anger ride in shame
I'll make myself a pact not to shirk those on the path just today
I am free...
I'll not lose my faith
Its an inside job today
I know this one thing... (???)
I used to try to kill love
It was the highest seed
Breeding insecurity, I am here
Searching for my ... the way
I choose to feel as I am
I choose to feel as I am
I'll not lose my faith
Its an inside job today
Oh holding on, the light up nigh
On my knees to rise and this my broken soul again
