Man in the Mirror

Scott Weiland has gone from suicidal rock'n'roll train wreck to wizened rock'n'roll survivor. Who better to reflect on valuable life lessons than someone who's been on the brink of death? by Matt Ashare

Scott Weiland is off drugs, but that doesn't mean he doesn't like to indulge once in a while. Over dinner in May, a few hours before a Velvet Revolver club show in Boston, the perpetually waifish singer downs a beer and a whiskey as he picks at his crab cake dinner. He isn't done acting up, either. Impatiently waiting for the check, he lights a cigarette at the table. "You can't smoke here," the waitress tells him. "I know," he says, before taking one last drag.

A bit of attitude and misbehavior is expected from Weiland, whose destructive tendencies derailed Stone Temple Pilots and his brief solo career. But in 2003, with the prospect of real jail time looming, Weiland cleaned up his act and joined Guns N' Roses refugees Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum, and L.A. rock vet Dave Kushner to form Velvet Revolver. The supergroup's 2004 debut of Sunset Strip arena rock, Contraband, married Weiland's chest-pounding vocals to Slash's turbocharged blooze riffery. The pairing worked: The album went on to sell more than three million copies worldwide.

Considering the egos involved, the fact that the quintet are still together and releasing a second album, Libertad, is a minor miracle. "I think it's leaps and bounds beyond the first," Weiland says. "This is the best record I've made since STP's Tiny Music."

Outside of the band, Weiland's been keeping busy running his label, Softdrive, and building a recording studio. But this being Scott Weiland, he can't help but remain tabloid fodder, most recently due to a domestic dispute that ended with his wife igniting a bonfire of his clothes outside their L.A. home. What better time for this grizzled grunge-era survivor to impart some rock-star wisdom on your ass?

[CAREER] Plan for Life After Rock
I remember how I felt when I first got a record deal. It was my lifelong dream. I was so ambitious, and I worked so hard at it. So I know what bands and artists go through. To be able to make someone else's dream come true--that's the reason I've been working so hard on putting my record company and studio together. The studio used to be a machine shop; it reeked of grease. Now there's a stage, a control booth, everything. It's my number one passion outside of the band. I'll always want to make music, but my studio is really the direction I want to go. I'm almost 40, and I don't want to be shaking my ass forever onstage. I have no aspiration to be Mick Jagger and to be in tight pants when I'm 45.

[RECREATION] Just Say No, Eventually, to Drugs
I was in Velvet Revolver, and I was trying to get clean. I was going to detox after detox, and it just wasn't working. One night I was going down to my studio to meet my partner. And I just couldn't wait to fix. So I decided to fix right in front of the studio. This is a safe industrial area in Burbank. Never seen a cop there. Pulled out the rig. Cooked it up. And then, lo and behold, a black-and-white pulls up, lights flash, and I got busted. That was four years ago. I got charged with a felony. And because of Proposition 36 in California, I was afforded long-term treatment. I got loaded one more time in treatment. And for three and a half years I haven't done drugs of any kind.

[PARENTING] Suicide Is for Quitters
Having a family saved my life. It came to a point for me, four years ago, when I was just completely suicidal. I couldn't live the way I was living anymore. I was separated from my wife and my kids. Any my wife wouldn't allow me in the house. They were living in San Diego, and I was at our apartment in L.A. I was completely paranoid from shooting cocaine, coming down from heroin, then going back up on cocaine. And I was more depressed than I had ever been. I wanted to hang myself. I thought that probably was the most selfless thing to do, because I was doing my kids more harm than good. And then I spoke to someone who told me that it would be incredibly selfish of me to commit suicide because of the legacy I would be leaving behind for them: For the rest of their lives, when other people would talk about their parents, my kids would have to say that their father committed suicide. That really hit me.

[INTIMACY] Sometimes, Think Small
In the beginning of STP, we didn't play clubs for long before we progressed into being a shed and arena act. It happened very quickly. But as the years went by, we yearned for that closeness to the audience. So it was better for us to be able to throw in some club gigs on a tour, just to have that intimate experience. And it works. A lot of big bands do club shows, even the Stones, before a big tour. You get to go into small venues, and your really hard-core fans get a chance to see you in an intimate setting. And you also have a chance to work out the kinks without worrying so much about whether the set is perfect every night. You can kind of flip-flop songs to see how the set flows and try different tunes to see what the right tempos and keys are. It's like playing little rehearsals.

[SOCIALIZING] Seek Friends With Common Interests
It's really important to not pass judgment on other people in the band. With STP, there was always a lot of judgment being thrown back and forth. The band against me and then me against them--I was always set up as this scapegoat. The thing with Velvet Revolver is that we trust each other because we've walked the same dark alleys. We've all been busted. We all know what the back of a police car feels like.

[DIET] Enjoy a Light Snack
I need to eat something before I play, or else I run out of fuel. But I don't like to eat a lot, or else I'll vomit all over the first row. Even at 39 years old, I still give every ounce of myself and expend every bit of bodily fluid onstage.

[INSPIRATION] Use Your Disillusion
In STP, we really thought we were on to something original. I mean, there were all these little scenes in cities all over the country, and then it was Seattle that exploded. And when "Plush" came out, it got compared to Pearl Jam. And totally honestly, "Plush" maybe does sound a little like Pearl Jam. But "Sex Type Thing" doesn't sound anything like Pearl Jam, and it's not like the whole album does. So it really was a deep wound, initially. I thought we would be judged by the depth and intensity of our music and lyrics. Then someone told us about all the critics who hated Led Zeppelin when they came out. So, from that point on, it just forced us to get more creative. We challenged ourselves to prove people wrong.

[MEDICATION] Occasionally, Say Yes to Drugs
I have bipolar disorder, but it took a long time to get me on the right meds. And the problem is, if someone is not properly medicated, when real emotional things happen, it can trigger situations you can't really control. For example: My wife and I are both really passionate people, and all that stuff about the clothes burning--all of that was basically just a bad week. And the media blew it out of proportion. Every married couple has bad days, or a bad week. You know, fights where your wife slaps you in the face or throws dishes at you. Only with most people, it doesn't end up in the news. When it involves me and my wife, because I'm this famous rock guy, this famous junkie who has been in two bands, who has sold millions of records, every single thing that happens to me gets into the paper. So maybe now I can let people know what the real deal is: We're an incredibly happy family. We've been living together for over nine years, and we've been married for seven. We love each other more than anything else in the world. And that's not some bullshit running-for-president answer.

[PRODUCTIVITY] Always Be Prepared
I use my studio as a place I can go during the day, like an office. I might be driving down the street and get a song in my head, so I'll just call the studio and have my partner put the phone up to the mic so that I can hum the melody or the guitar riff. By the time I get there, he'll already have the microphones hooked up, and I'll just take it from there. I'll start tinkering, turn on the tape and just record. So I have this endless stockpile of all these songs that I've written, all ready to go for my next solo album.

Il fallait le voir s'acharner sur son manche durant Do It For the Kids.

Weiland a évolué

I just got off the phone with Dean Deleo

My friend is attending the Shred school in Los Angeles and gave the phone over to Dean Deleo so that I could talk to him. Really super nice guy, and we talked for a good 3-4 minutes. Here are some questions and comments I had for him his responses.

Me: Scott recently had some comments in Blender and the Washington post about wanting to make a better final chapter with Stone Temple Pilots. Would you be interested in working again with Scott Erik and your brother again?

DD: Yes I would be way into that

Me: Even after the fallout you guys had at the end of the Shangri-la tour?

DD: Man things like that go away very quickly, there is no animosity.

Me: Matt Sorum recently spoke about you guys in Rolling Stone and said he doesn't think anyone is biding their fucking time waiting for Stone Temple Pilots to reunite and I would just like to tell you that my friends and I love you and that there are people out there that love you guys and appreciate your music.

DD: Thank you so much that's awesome to hear

Me: One more question before I let you go, what's your favorite STP album
