TFT Notes: The first Cincinnati show in 6 years - 2003's show was cancelled due to flooding at the venue - begins at 7:25PM with Eddie and his guitar taking the stage for a solo version of "The Kids Are Alright." The first of many Who references tonight (Eddie is also wearing a "Maximum R&B" style Who t-shirt). He introduces opening act Robert Pollard, noting that Pollard is from "up the road" in Dayton, Ohio (only about 30 miles away from Cincy). Ed is sidestage rocking out for most of Pollard's set, and joins him on stage for the last part of Pollard's last song, "Love is Stronger than Witchcraft." "Even Flow" notably gets large chunks of Jimi Hendrix's "Third Rock from the Sun" thrown into the jam, courtesy of Mike McCready. Later, "Not For You" sports a "Modern Girl" tag (Sleater-Kinney), "Better Man" gets a tag of "Save it for Later," and Wishlist gets tagged with the same Robert Pollard song that Eddie joined Pollard on during the opening set, "Love is Stronger than Witchcraft." Early on, fans in the front rows throw little plastic parachute toys onstage and Ed comments that he finally understands why, but he says they still aren't going to play "Parachutes" tonight. Appropriately right before "Love Boat Captian," Eddie discusses how almost exactly six years to the day ago, nine fans died at the concert in Denmark (Roskilde) and among the first people to call and offer support were The Who's Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. He went on to explain that it was at this very same Cincinnati venue (then called the Riverfront Coliseum) where several fans died in a similar crush trying to enter a Who concert (It was 12/3/1979 and 11 died). At another point in the night, Ed pulled out a flyer and discussed how a Pearl Jam fan named Brian Shaffer from Columbus, Ohio had been missing since April, and since the band feels like the fans are in some way "part of the family," they wanted to call attention to him in hopes that someone is able to help find him. Ed mentioned that , and described Brian's Pearl Jam tattoo and the reward for information along with a website to visit if you know anything, findbrianshaffer.com. Mike McCready, as usual, is really into his "Crazy Mary" solo, and Ed tries to do the classic back-to-back lean with him, but Mike charges on by to rock out over by Boom. A song later, after "Rearviewmirror", as the band leaves the stage, Ed jokingly kicks Mike in the butt. When they return for the final encore, someone in the front row throws a copy of the new Rolling Stone with Eddie on the cover on stage and Ed begins to elaborately wipe his ass with it, angrily commenting about how they agreed to do the Rolling Stone cover as a band, but they went and put only Eddie on the cover anyway. He said something along the lines of, "I have fifty copies of this at home next to the toilet to use when I take a shit." He also talked about how Pearl Jam has survived for almost 16 years because they are a band - not just one guy - and how they did a whole band photo shoot and everything, but the magazine put that picture on the inside. By the end of Ed's diatribe, the magazine was in shreds and a high energy "Comatose" was launched. In yet another Who nod, the night ended with "Baba O'Riley," with Eddie and Robert Pollard trading verses.

Review: Pearl Jam's Magical History Tour

Band pulls no punches during set

All the hallmarks were there Saturday night during Pearl Jam's show at U.S Bank Arena: the disco ball, the gratuitous guitar and drum solos, the long-haired, mumbly singer pensively smoking and swigging from a wine bottle while making importan -sounding pronouncements, the obligatory audience-taking-over-the-vocals for half a song and a lights-up, show-stopping rendition of a stadium classic by the Who. In some ways, most ways, really, it was arena rock 101.

But during two-and-a-half hours of mostly live-wire rock songs delivered with utter conviction, the last men left standing from the early 1990s grunge rock movement not only avoided aping those stadium rock clichés, they transcended them. Sixteen years into its iconoclastic career, Pearl Jam still thrills because the music is about that rarest of things in rock: pure emotion.

Say what you will about singer Eddie Vedder's sometimes-mocked martyr complex, but you can't deny the 41-year-old's seemingly limitless energy and deep respect for rock history. Wearing jeans and a vintage Who T-shirt, Vedder took a moment after an epic version of one of the band's early hits, “Even Flow” -- the one featuring the gratuitous guitar and drum solo -- and alluded to the 1979 Who tragedy that took place at the formerly named Riverfront Coliseum resulting in 11 deaths.

Tying it to his band's own tragedy, at Roskilde in Denmark in 2000, where nine fans were trampled to death, Vedder dedicated the meditative “Love Boat Captain” as a “little prayer for those who passed and all the survivors.” It was a fitting, and touching, moment during a show that was otherwise filled with shout-along songs and more fist-pumping than a fascist rally.

For a band with such a clear respect for history, Pearl Jam obliterated the timeline between such early, indelible hits as “Alive” -- as thrilling now as it was 15 years ago in clubs one-tenth the size of the arena -- and new anthems such as “World Wide Suicide” and “Life Wasted,” a blistering punk cluster bomb from the band's recently released self-titled album. All three songs had the capacity crowd singing along as if each were a 15-year-old chestnut.

While guitarist Mike McCready sometimes erred on the side of flashy, his enthusiasm during the blitzing “Hail, Hail” was palpable, as was the joy of steady-on bassist Jeff Ament, who kept his head down and the groove fluid for the entire show. The band dipped into nearly every facet of its catalog, from such live staples as “Corduroy,” to the intense “Green Disease,” the Neil Young-like stomper “Not For You” and the emotional ballad “Wishlist,” which Vedder dedicated to a member of the band's “family,” a 22-year-old Columbus fan who went missing last year.

After inserting a grunged up, warp-speed snippet of the English Beat's ska classic “Save it for Later” into their hit “Better Man,” and playing a searing version of “Alive,” the band closed the show by bringing out Robert Pollard, the former leader of Dayton's Guided By Voices, who opened hours earlier with a set of his trademark British-inspired garage rock. Trading off on verses during a shambolic version of the Who's “Baba O'Riley” with the house lights blazing, the unlikely duo paid homage to their heroes and the departed ones the only way they know how - by celebrating life.

‘With Love to Mandi & Eric, Love Rules- Eddie’

I never in my life thought id get to meet any members from pearl jam,
much less EV. Not that I’m anywhere close to being one of those ‘vedder
obssesers’ I’ve just always had a huge appreciate for things he did,
things he said, and the music that I fell in love with.

Between my husband and I, we have attended about 22 shows. It would have
been more if I was older than I was (was very young when they first
started, so my mother wouldn’t dare let me go to a rock concert. There’s
really no way to describe how much I enjoy shows. The shows I’ve been
to, ive met some of the coolest people and always have such a blast with
them before the show even starts and after the show is over, its just
unreal. I even met my husband at a pearl jam show so I owe a lot of my
world honestly, to Pearl Jam. So when I got the chance to meet Eddie
Vedder, lets just say it was like going to church and then meeting god.

Well a year prior to the show in E. Rutherford (night one) I had
attended the show at the Wachovia center in Philadelphia. Not to get too
personal with this story, but me and the love of my life had gone
through hell the year prior to that show. That show was what kept us
going, because we knew, soon we would be able to be together, and go to
another show. Everything seemed to work out perfectly that night, not
only did I get to hear songs that I wanted to so bad, I also caught Ed’s
harmonica at the beginning of the night (and I was standing in between
two really tall guys so I thought it was funny that I caught it instead
of them lol) So any who, now that I’ve cleared these things up, ill move
on with my actual point.

So we went to church that night, haha, and had such a blast. We had
decent seats got a ton of great songs (ie footsteps, indifference
closer, ect) and met some people that we had been wanting to for a very
long time and realized they were just as cool as they were via phone and
internet. After the show sadly, we really had no place to be other than
to go sleep on the floor Eric’s (my husband) parents house. So we
decided to hang out for a little while after the show. We were waiting
for a friend, and just chatting when we realized it was an hour later
and the entire parking lot had cleared. Eric had mentioned “wouldn’t it
be so cool if one of the guys came out?” I pretty much shook it off
because ‘yeah right, like we’d ever be that lucky.’ So then as we were
about the leave, we saw a set of black vans come out of the venue. We
both remembered hearing that the guys traveled in black vans, so I ran
to the car and got my good luck pearl jam charm, our harmonica. I gave
it to Eric and he put it in his pocket. Again I was completely positive
that we wouldn’t meet anyone, so I just stayed standing to let Eric be
more excited than I’ve ever seen him be.

A few minutes later another van came out of the underground part of the
venue. Eric took out his harmonica, and waved it in a “thanks for this”
kind of way. The van suddenly stopped, and who else, but eddie vedder,
jumped out of the van, walked right up to me, and stood as if saying
“hi, im here” lol So yeah I was completely in shock. Never thought in a
million years id get to shake the mans hand. Much less have him treat me
so well, and refuse my handshake for a hug. I was completely cool the
entire time for those who were wondering only because my legs were
shaking so bad! Eric of course was rambling at him about how we met,
ect, so I didn’t get time to tell him much. I also figured he wouldn’t
appreciate some random chick attacking him with all these words of
thanks. So I kept quiet mostly, and noticed that ed was fidgeting with
his new hat, trying to take the cardboard out. I said something like,
“new hat or what?” I was about to go on a long rant about baseball(im a
huge fan and knew he was too) but then eric wanted to take a picture, so
Ed’s body guard Pete, took the cam, and told us all to get ready. They
were both completely cool about everything. Ed seemed almost happy to
sign our harmonica and take a picture. I always saw Ed as being someone
who that would probably annoy and I could understand that. I was
completely wrong of course, and ed was one of the nicest people ive ever
met. He was very ed, yet had this completely loving, sweet ‘aura’ around
him. Ed then put his arms out for both of us to give him a hug, and we
said our goodbyes and all left the venue.

So ed, if you ever read this, sorry that I was so quiet and didn’t give
you the thanks you and all the things that should have been said that
you deserve. It’s a little bit intimidating to meet someone you thought
you never would in a million years. So with that said, I should have
kissed YOUR hand and said so much more, but hopefully you heard some of
what I had to say some how.

That’s our Ed story and was one of the greatest moments of my life and
we will always hold it dear in our hearts.

Mandi & Eric

Pearl Jam remember killed fans

Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder took a moment during the band's show at Cincinnati's U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night (June 24th) to pay tribute to the memory of 11 fans killed at the venue 27 years ago. The concertgoers were trampled to death at the facility, then called Riverfront Coliseum, during a Who concert in 1979. Vedder dedicated "Wishlist" to them, calling it a "little prayer for those who passed and all the survivors." The singer also made a reference to a similar event in Pearl Jam's own history, when nine fans were crushed to death during the band's set at a Danish festival in 2000.

Vedder said that the Who's Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend both called his band after the Danish tragedy to help them deal with the aftermath.

The vocalist wore a vintage Who T-shirt for Saturday night's show, which Pearl Jam finished with a version of the British band's classic "Baba O'Riley."

In other news, VH1 will premiere Pearl Jam's episode of Storytellers on July 1st at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The show was taped on May 31st in New York.

Pearl Jam will perform at a July 20th benefit in Portland, Oregon for the Northwest Chapter of the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). Guitarist Mike McCready has worked closely with the organization since revealing in 2002 that he has Crohn's Disease.

The band continued its current North American tour on June 27th, in St. Paul, Minnesota.
